Healing Your Soul Through Art and Music
Art and music have a profound capacity to heal. Just ask anyone who’s ever played the same song on repeat to soothe the ache of a breakup, or found calm while shaping clay on a potter’s wheel. Whether it’s songwriting, painting, gardening, or working with clay, these creative expressions have the power to help us tune into what really matters—our God-given ability to co-create with Him.
As a therapist, I’ve seen firsthand how art, music, and drama can bypass the overworked intellect and tap into the deep well of intuitive truth people carry within. Through role-play, individuals often hear themselves speak words that bring healing and restoration—words that touch the unresolved parts of themselves. Drawing or painting moments of trauma or significant life events can reveal how the inner self perceives those experiences, and the narratives that formed in response—narratives that often still hold people captive.
These old stories once served to protect us. They were shaped by the emotional understanding we had at the time, perhaps as a five-year-old trying to make sense of a painful moment. But those outdated perceptions can keep us stuck, reacting from the past instead of living fully in the present.
Art and music give us a way out. When we create, we sidestep those ingrained thought patterns and bring fresh perspective to the places we’ve neglected. Colors, sounds, textures—even new language—can awaken insight, bring revelation, and release us from the grip of old pain.
So pick up a paintbrush, grab a handful of pastels, or dust off that old guitar. Let yourself hum, strum, draw, or mold something that expresses your joy, your sorrow, your anger—whatever you’re holding inside. Even if you can’t find the words, your soul already knows the song. And through that creative process, healing will come.
